The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) gained the university status in 1992 although its roots stretch back to 1828. Today, it is a multi-campus international institution as well as a leading research centre. It is especially known for its research in astrophysics. It has observatories in the UK and Africa to conduct studies for NASA. It also joins forces with Chinese partners for nanotechnology research.

UCLan’s portfolio offering 500 undergraduate and 180 postgraduate courses is one of the most impressive in the educational field. It has been recognized as one of the best universities to study Forensic Science, Fashion, as well as Aerospace Engineering and Dentistry. All of its courses have a focus on employment and collaboration with many businesses in the UK and worldwide. The university is named fourth in the UK for the number of start-ups opened by its graduates.

The university enrols more than 32,000 students from over 100 countries. It offers a few bursaries and scholarships for its international undergraduate and postgraduate students including a 2,000-worth financial bursary, carers bursary, and dependants bursary.

Overview

The campus of the University of Central Lancashire is located in Preston, just a few minutes’ walk from its centre. The campus has recently seen a major £200 million-worth renovation opening access to some of the best technology and facilities around. The state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre was launched in 2019, and the Student Centre and Civic Square opened their doors in 2021. Besides the campus in Preston, the university has three more in Burney (East Lancashire), Cyprus, and West Cambria.

The university provides more than 2,000 rooms in its Halls of Residence for international students in their first year of study. The majority of halls are self-catered providing en-suite and shared housing options.

The university runs a number of support programmes to help new students adapt and feel at home. The services include airport pick-up, orientation programmes, free English language courses for overseas applicants, and membership in the International Student Society.
