The history of Royal Holloway begins in 1849 in London with the foundation of Bedford College. At the end of the 19th century, Royal Holloway College opened its magnificent Founders Building. The two colleges joined the University of London in 1900, and 85 years later, they merged to become Royal Holloway.
Today, the university has more than 11,000 students. More than one-third of its student population came from foreign countries. Overall, you can meet students from more than 130 counties scattered around the globe. THE World University Rankings 2020 placed the university 21st for the international outlook. Royal Holloway maintains strong links and exchange programmes with universities from Canada, The USA, Hong Kong, and Australia. The list of its most prominent partners includes Yale, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Toronto.
The university is broken into three faculties and 20 academic departments. It is most notable for its academic strength in such subjects as Mathematics, Music, Modern Languages, Geography, Drama, and others. The university holds numerous awards for teaching excellence across multiple disciplines. It is 22nd in the UK according to The Times Good University Guide 2021 and 34th by Times Higher Education.
The university awards merit-based International Excellence Scholarships to twelve first-year undergraduate students. There is also a range of other scholarships for students who came from foreign countries.

Royal Holloway boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Its stunning Founder’s Building and Picture Gallery are the focal points of 134 acres of picturesque Surrey parkland. The site is not only beautiful but also travel-friendly. It is located only 7 miles from Heathrow Airport and less than 20 miles from central London. The university’s campus is highly praised for its friendly and relaxed, and at the same time, lively atmosphere. Besides facilities located in Surrey, Royal Holloway has a Bedford Square campus in Bloomsbury.
The university guarantees accommodation for all first-year international students if they meet the deadlines. In total, it provides 3,000 rooms in the recently renovated Founder’s Building as well as in the modern Williamson, Tyke & Butler halls of residence.
Pre-sessional English courses are available to international students wishing to gain more confidence in their academic skills.
