The history of the University of Leicester begins in 1921 with the foundation of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College. It received the Royal Charter in 1957, which gave it university status. Today, the university delivers 150 courses covering 30 subject areas. They are distributed across three colleges: Life and Science, Science and Engineering and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. The majority of courses provide a possibility to study abroad. The university built a large network with universities in 27 countries and students can opt to spend an academic year in one of them.
The university has a strong position on the international educational scene. On the list of 1,500 universities from 93 countries according to Times Higher Education, it occupies the 170th place. This is one of the reasons why foreign students choose Leicester for obtaining their degrees. Of 20,000 students it welcomes yearly, 4,000 come from abroad. The students also enjoy one of the highest employment rates in the country. 94% of Leicester’s graduates were able to find work within 6 months after receiving a graduate diploma.
The University of Leicester provides several international scholarships that partly cover tuition or other fees. Its Citizen of Change 100 scholarship is designed for 50 UK and EU students and 50 international students. The latter can benefit from a 50% reduction in first year tuition fees. There are also scholarships for students of the College of Science and Engineering, family loyalty discounts as well as scholarships for Chinese postgraduate students.

Overview
The university operates its campus from Leicester, a multicultural city sitting inside a triangle formed by nearby Birmingham, Peterborough, and Nottingham. The city hosts a number of popular festivals including the UK’s longest running comedy festival, the largest Diwali celebrations outside India and one of the biggest Caribbean Carnivals. Besides that, the city provides a multitude of sporting events. If you desire a change of scenery for a day or two, beautiful countryside stretches just outside of Leicester.
The university provides accommodation in two locations – the Village and the City. The Village, sitting a few bus stops from the campus, has eight halls of residence with varying room types and architectural styles. The Village also features vast green spaces and the university’s botanic garden. The city is located close to the campus and the centre of the city. Accommodation options vary through single bedrooms and studio flats.
