The University of Leeds started its journey in 1904, although its roots go back to the nineteenth century when its predecessors The Leeds School of Medicine and The Yorkshire College of Science were established in 1831 and 1874 respectively. Today, the university is a member of the Russell Group of prestigious research universities. It reserved a top ten spot in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 and the Guardian University Guide 2019. 89% of its students in their third year are satisfied with the quality of their courses. It also finished third in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.
The university welcomes 38,000 students (it is the fifth largest university in the UK), and about 9,000 students come from one of 170 foreign countries. The International Student Office is committed to helping international students adjust to their life in Leeds by providing advice and information. The university also awards subject related scholarships for international undergraduates based on their academic achievements.
The University of Leeds has eight faculties divided into several schools, centres, and institutes. A degree obtained in the university is highly valued by both employers and other higher education institutions. The university goes to great lengths to ensure the best quality of student life outside the classrooms. It provides access to 300 clubs and societies and its Student Union is the only one to win two prestigious Student Union Evaluation Initiative awards.
