The history of the University of Huddersfield begins in 1825 when it was established as the Huddersfield Scientific and Mechanic Institute. Throughout its almost 200 years-long journey, it gained a number of prestigious awards marking its achievements in teaching and research activities. It won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 and is a gold rated university according to the Teaching Excellence Framework award. Overall, the university is praised for its outstanding quality of teaching and great outcomes for its graduates.

One of the reasons why the University of Huddersfield thrives in the field of education is its professionally qualified teaching staff. It won 17 awards in the National Teaching Fellowship for the quality of lectures. In addition, the university was named The Entrepreneurial University of the Year and the University of the Year at the Times Higher Education awards in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

With 18,000 students coming from more than a hundred countries around the world, the university benefits from a friendly and diverse student community. Many choose Huddersfield due to the possibility to combine courses and real workplace experience. HESA 2018-2019 rankings put the university in the top 15 for work placement. About 2,000 students choose work placement options yearly. Also, thanks to strong links with educational institutions from other countries, students can take advantage of exchange programmes.
