The University of Glasgow has been a leading higher education institution in Scotland since 1451. It is among the oldest universities in the country and the fourth oldest in the English speaking world. The title of best Scottish University of the Year according to the Good University Guide 2018 testifies to its high standards of education. The university is the founding member of Universitas 21 comprised of research-led institutions and one of 24 members of the Russell Group.
The university boasts a truly international student community. Of 25,000 students, almost 30% come from the EU and other foreign countries. The university is organized into four colleges: College of Arts; Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences; Sciences and Engineering and Social Sciences. Together, they offer more than 600 courses. The University of Glasgow has three main campuses. The Gilmorehill Campus sits 3 miles from the centre of Glasgow. Its Gothic-revival main building is considered one of the most beautiful in the city; it is a popular choice for wedding ceremonies. The Crichton Campus in Dumfries benefits from 85 acres of parkland encircling its buildings. Garscube Campus located to the northwest of Glasgow and four miles from the Gilmorehill Campus houses the School of Veterinary Medicine. It also features the university’s sports facilities including gyms, courts and pitches.
