Aston University welcomes first cohort of Research Scientist Degree Apprentices

A new degree apprenticeship programme has welcomed its first cohort into the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University. The Research Scientist MRes Degree Apprenticeship will allow students to learn all the skills necessary to undertake scientific investigations and communicate information accurately and effectively to a range of audiences, whilst also developing commercial and leadership skills. 

The Level 7 apprenticeship, which is aimed at postgraduate level students, has been designed to support the development of graduate scientists and assist them into developing into talented researchers.

Students on the programme will advance their theoretical and practical knowledge in the lab and learn how to communicate about their research. Other modules, such as Business for Biosciences, will enable the apprentices to develop commercial and leadership skills in order to maximise their research impact and value. 

Ivan Wall, professor of regenerative medicine, cell & gene therapy bioprocessing and the apprenticeship programme director, said: 

I am delighted to be involved with this fantastic new degree apprenticeship for postgraduates. The whole programme is tailored to each individual student’s professional development needs. It gives a bespoke experience that will not only give our students the skills, knowledge and practical experience required to succeed, but it will help advance their careers.

The course is intended for those already working in biosciences or biomedical roles who want to develop their skills and knowledge of bioscience research challenges and to develop commercial and leadership skills.

Graduates will receive an MRes Research Scientist Apprenticeship Certificate. The award also aligns with several of the competencies/attributes required for the professional recognition of Chartered Member status by the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics.
